Keeping his sayings
Jesus did not only teach about himself. He gave commandments, and he expected his disciples to keep them: “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). When he sent the apostles out, he told them to teach the nations “to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20).
We are not saved by keeping commandments. Forgiveness and eternal life are God’s gift through his Son, received by believing the gospel and being baptised. But Jesus is plain that the gift changes how we live: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Grace and obedience sets out how the two fit together.
In the 1800s Robert Roberts gathered the commandments of Jesus and his apostles into a hundred short sayings, printed small enough to carry in a pocket and read through the day. They are given here as he wrote them, with the Bible passages each one comes from.

Titus 3:113Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. 15For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 16As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. 17Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

2 John 1:8-103If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

1 Timothy 2:93Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

christadelphian.nz/commandments · Robert Roberts, Epitome of the Commandments of Christ
About this list
Robert Roberts (1839–1898) published this Epitome of the Commandments of Christ as a small card or booklet. On its title page he set these sayings:
“Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you.” — Jesus, John 15:14
‘Teach them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded.’ — Jesus, Matthew 28:20
“If ye know these things, happy are ye, if ye do them.” — Jesus, John 13:17
‘Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom, but he that doeth the will of my Father.’ — Jesus, Matthew 7:21
‘Be doers of the Word, not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.’ — James, James 1:22
“He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar.” — John, 1 John 2:4
His preface
Popular theology has reduced the commandments of Christ and His Apostles to a practical nullity. It has totally obscured the principle of obedience as the basis of our acceptance with God in Christ, by its doctrine of ‘justification by faith alone,’ and that too, of the most momentary character in the hour of death. It is part of the modern restitution of primitive apostolic ways, to recognize distinctly, that while faith turns a sinner into a saint, obedience only will secure a saint’s acceptance at the judgment seat of Christ; and that a disobedient saint will be rejected more decisively than even an unjustified sinner.
The rule or standard of obedience is to be found in the commandments of Christ. Christ speaks very plainly on this subject in the statements quoted on the title-page. They are summed up in this saying of his—“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love.”
Before we can keep his commandments, we must know them; and in order to know them to any purpose, we must remember them. This epitome is intended as a help to the memory. The commandments are picked out from the apostolic writings, and classified in a way convenient to remember, and printed in a form convenient for carrying about on the person daily, so that they may be often looked at, and imprinted on the mind. The references are supplied for the satisfaction of those who desire to be quite sure of their foundation. What excellent men and women are those who keep all these commandments! Where are they? Lord, increase their number.
This edition
The text follows a modern transcription of the booklet. Plain typing errors have been corrected, and the twelve sections are numbered in order. Every passage cited has been checked against the King James Version; where a reference had clearly been mistyped, it has been corrected:
- No. 18: Matt. 24:14 → Matt. 24:44
- No. 18: Luke 14:26 → Luke 17:26 (probable)
- No. 20: Rev 2:10-25 → Rev. 2:10, 25
- No. 46: Rom. 12:5 → Rom. 12:15
- No. 51: 1 Cor. 10:3 → 1 Cor. 10:31
Roberts often gives the sense of a passage rather than its exact words, so open the passages to read Scripture itself.
